DOG STUFF

Tobit, Angel and dogBook of Tobit - The Book of Tobit is a book of scripture that is part of the Catholic and Orthodox biblical canon; it is, however, listed as a book of the Apocrypha of the Church of England and regarded by Protestants as apocryphal.

It tells the story of Tobias who is sent by his father Tobit to collect a sum of money; Angel Raphael offers to aid and protect Tobias on his journey, and they leave accompanied by Tobias' dog.

Book of Tobit 5:16

So they were well pleased. Then said he to Tobias, Prepare thyself for the journey, and God send you a good journey. And when his son had prepared all things far the journey, his father said, Go thou with this man, and God, which dwelleth in heaven, prosper your journey, and the angel of God keep you company. So they went forth both, and the young man's dog with them.

Book of Tobit 11:4
And take in thine hand the gall of the fish. So they went their way, and the dog went after them.

Catholic Saints

Saint Roch - While hiding in a forest, Roch would have perished had not a dog (his own dog according historic research presented in the book The Pawprints of History, by Stanley Coren) supplied him with bread.

Saint Margaret of Cortona - Italian penitent of the Third Order of Saint Francis. As a dog had led Margaret to the body of her murdered lover in the forest, the saint is usually shown with a dog by her side.

Saint John Bosco - Don Bosco (1815-1888) was an Italian Catholic priest and educator, who employed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment; he was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1934. Bosco himself wrote about Grigio, a big dog that appeared from thin air and for 10 years (from 1854 to 1864) protected him like a canine guard angel — as an educator of poor children, Bosco made some enemies who wanted him dead, and if Grigio hadn't been around, they would have succeeded.

A dog called "Grigio" is the official mascot of the Don Bosco Grey Wolves of Don Bosco Technical College, Mandaluyong, Philippines.

Chinese Zodiac - The 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac are: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

Constellations - Group of stars visibly related to each other in a particular configuration or pattern. There are 88 constellations, three of them related to dogs: Canis Major (greater dog), Canis Minor (smaller dog) and Canes Venatici (hunting dogs). The brighter star in the nocturnal sky is Sirius (Canis Major); Sirius Black is a character in the Harry Potter series; he can transform himself into a dog.

Dream
Boris Levinson

I, a child
Try to reach the stars...
Sirius is so near.
I run to the nearest hill
My reach is always too short
Wait til I am a grown man!
Now, I am old and bent with years
No more running to the hill and mountain top —
Yet, a warm, steady, life-giving glow
Reaches me from Sirius... the unattainable.
I collect
White iridescent and evanescent starbeams
For my trip home to
Sirius the dog star.

Dog of Pompeii - The Italian city of Pompeii was totally destroyed (and buried) by the eruption of the Mount Vesuvius in 79; many of its inhabitants didn't have time to escape and died.

In 1748, when the ruins of the city were excavated, archeologists found under thick layers of ash hollow spaces shaped like bodies of people and animals, showing exactly what they were doing when the tragedy happened.

These shapes, filled with plaster, can be seen at the Naples National Archaeological Museum — one of them is of a dog.

Strelka and BelkaSoviet Space Dogs - During the 1950s and 1960s, in preparation for sending man to space, the USRR launched several missions with canine passengers; dogs were chosen because they endure long periods of inactivity more easily than other animals, such as apes — poor doggies.

Before them, several other dogs had already made sub-orbital flights. The cosmonaut dogs were honored with commemorative stamps in Russia.

The dogs that made (or were selected to make) orbital space flights were:

  1. Laika - 1957, Sputnik 2 - died - read her story in Statues
  2. Bars and Lisichka - 1960, never made it to space, their rocket exploded seconds into the launch - died
  3. Belka and Strelka - 1960, Sputnik 5 (Korabl-Sputnik 2) - survived
  4. Pchelka and Mushka - 1960, Sputnik 6 (Korabl-Sputnik 3) - died
  5. Chernushka - 1961, Sputnik 9 (Korabl-Sputnik 4) - survived
  6. Zvezdochka - 1961, Sputnik 10 (Korabl-Sputnik 5) - survived - read her story in Statues
  7. Veterok and Ugolyok - 1966, Kosmos 110 - survived

The Triplets of Belleville - Bruno, a cute Basset Hound from this animated movie looks very much like Hommer... Watching the movie, I, Gisele, was appalled to see Bruno doing the same things Hommer used to do, they had the same quirks when eating or sleeping!
