Although the title is "Muskehounds", the characters are referenced as being "Musketeers" through all series.
In 1625, Dogtanian leaves his parents' house in Béarn — a small village in Southern France — and reads to Paris, in order to become a member of the Musketeers, the special guard of the Royal Palace.
In the big city, little Dogtanian has to face many perils; he has just arrived, and gets himself an enemy, the evil Count Rochefort (AKA Black Mustache). The Count is the second-in-command of Cardinal Richelieu, the Prime Minister of France who wants to get rid of the Musketeers, replacing them with his own personal guard, thus controlling the Palace and his weak King, Louis XIII.
However, Anne of Austria, the Queen, has other plans. She wants peace between France and England and is in contact with the Duke of Buckingham (Prime Minister of England). With the help of Dogtanian, the Three Musketeers, and her lady-in-waiting Juliette, the Queen risks her own life to see a better future for her country.
Richelieu and his allies (Rochefort and the Captain of his Guard, Widimer) keep in the way of the Musketeers when they are after the most notorious thief and pirate of the time, the Blue Falcon, who wants to find the The Lights of the King (jewels given by King of Spain to Louis XII) that were stolen and hidden away some time ago. Richelieu wants to catch the Falcon to please King Louis XIII and have more influence over him.
