The Dog of knight Dirk van der Merwede

Cees de Gast

Here I am now, tired but satisfied
greyhound of knight Dirk
who fought for Jacoba, he is my hero brave,
but I don't desire to return to his barbaric violence
in which my lord of Meeuwen was going.

I followed him into the dark grave
but see the tombstone in the ancient church
on which I - vigilant, faithful - lie at his feet,
but he has yet Heusden's land, diked protected
after the water flowed from the great flood.

I am now accompanied by two doves,
they fly out but come  - I hope - back
like the dove of Noah flew back to the ark,
and with the olive leaf gave hope of life
and the broken wheel of life was restored again.

It are my doves of peace, messengers of abundance,
of welfare in the high seignory, our little village.
If you fly away, come back soon,
but rest on my head and on my back.
Stay here, here, life is good.
