MEMORIAIS DE GUERRA
11th Pennsylvania Infantry Monument - Sallie, the dog featured on this monument, was
the mascot of the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry in the American Civil War. A Bull Terrier who joined the regiment in 1861, she was loyal to the end. But Sallie was no saint — people say she hated three things — Rebels, Democrats, and Women...
After the Battle of Gettysburg, First Day, Sallie stayed by the side of her dead comrades, till the rescue came, on July 4, 1863; she was hurt and tired, but her friends took good care of her, so Sallie soon returned to the battle fields. On February 6, 1865, she ended up dying, after being shot at the Battle of Hatcher’s Run, and was buried on the battlefield, despite a heavy enemy fire.

Depois que se restabeleceu, Sallie voltou aos campos de batalha e, em 6 de fevereiro de 1865, acabou morrendo quando um tiro a atingiu durante a Batalha de Hatcher’s Run. Sallie foi enterrda ali mesmo, sob fogo cerrado do inimigo.
O monumento — um soldado e Sallie em bronze em pedestal de pedra, obra do artista Edward A. Kretschman — fica no Gettysburg National Military Park, em Gettysburg, Pensilvânia, Estados Unidos, e foi inaugurado em 3 de setembro de 1889.

Alert-Alabama War Dog Memorial - The monument depicts a troop of soldiers, plus German Shepherd Dog Little Joe; his handler Charles Wade Franks is one of the men. Little Joe died on February 22, 1970, in Vietnam.
Inscription on the plaque in front of the memorial:
An unheralded breed of soldier
Let all who read these words of gratitude and praise know that tens of thousands of america's fighting men and women owe their lives to the deeds and courage of war dogs and their handlers, further, let it be known that many breeds of dogs, large and small, served our nation in times of war, all going into harm's way with distinction and valor — unhesitating.
Let us not forget these unsung heroes are soldiers, too! These valiant dogs protect our military men and women through countless perils, give comfort in uncertainty, and share the suffering and the risks in the time of war. Over the decades, many of these dogs have made the supreme sacrifice, giving their own lives to shield our armed forces and military assets from hostile acts. Canines in the armed forces continue that noble tradition around the world today.
This monument is dedicated by the patriotic people of Alabama for all to bear witness in remembrance to these faithful war dogs and their Alabama handlers. Those who leave this place should remember the deeds and sacrifices of these four-legged soldiers. Furthermore, see in every dog, the unconditional loyalty inherent in war dogs and glimpse a refection of their shoulder-brothers heroic actions. These teams unhesitatingly fight for right and for our nation's freedoms. Lest we forget, we should hold them dear in our hearts and honor their courage. source
Alerta - Memorial ao Cão de Guerra do Alabama - Este monumento apresenta o Pastor Alemão Little Joe, seu adestrador Charles Wade Franks e diversos outros soldados. Little Joe morreu em 22 de fevereiro de 1970, no Vietnã. Inaugurado em 11 de novembro de 2008 (Dia dos Veteranos) no Alabama Memorial Battleship Park, na cidade de Mobile, Alabama, Estados Unidos.

Always Faithful - The United Doberman Club dedicated this monument to the Doberman Pinschers that served in the Pacific during the World War II. The plaque in Guam reads a text by Dr William W. Putney* (who commanded Third Dog Platoon): Twenty-five Marine War Dogs gave their lives liberating Guam in 1944. They served as sentries, messengers, and scouts. They explored caves, and detected mines and booby traps. Given in their memory and on behalf of the surviving men of the 2nd and 3rd Marine War Dog Platoons, many of whom owe their lives to the bravery and sacrifice of these gallant animals.
The names of the 25 dogs (engraved on the plaque) are: Kurt, Skipper, Nig, Missy, Blitz, Bursch, Yonnie, Poncho, Prince, Cappy, Arno, Pepper, Koko, Tubby, Fritz, Duke, Silver, Ludwig, Bunkie, Hobo, Emmy, Max, Brockie, Rickey and Tam (buried at sea off Asan Ponit).
The statue — sculpted by Susan Bahary representing Kurt, a Doberman who saved the lives of 250 Marines in Guam — has three replicas: one is at the University of Tennessee's College of Veterinary Medicine, in Knoxville; the second is at the Alfred M. Gray Marine Corps Research Center in Quantico, Virginia; and the third one is at the AKC Museum of the Dog in St. Louis, Missouri.

Sempre Fiel - O monumento Always Faithful, "inspirado pelo espírito heroico dos cães de guerra, símbolos de amor e devoção", foi dedicado pelo United Doberman Club aos corajosos Dobermanns que lutaram no Pacífico durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. A estátua, criada por Susan Bahary, está no Cemitério para Cães dos Fuzileiros Navais dos Estados Unidos, na Base Naval de Guam desde 21 de julho de 1994. O cão usado como modelo foi Kurt, que morreu na Ilha de Guam durante ataque japonês, juntamente com seu adestrador, soldado Alan Jacobson. Na placa estão gravados, além do de Kurt, o nome de mais 24 cães: Skipper, Nig, Missy, Blitz, Bursch, Yonnie, Poncho, Prince, Cappy, Arno, Pepper, Koko, Tubby, Fritz, Duke, Silver, Ludwig, Bunkie, Hobo, Emmy, Max, Brockie, Rickey e Tam (este último sepultado no mar).
Existem no país três réplicas:
1. Knoxville, Tennessee (Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária da Universidade do Tennessee, doada pelo Dr. Maurice Acree) - 17/07/1998

Sobre estes cães, o médico veterinário que serviu em Guam, Dr. William W. Putney, escreveu o livro Always Faithful: A Memoir of the Marine Dogs of WWII.
Vinte e cinco Cães de Guerra dos Fuzileiros Navais deram suas vidas libertando Guam em 1944. Serviram como sentinelas, mensageiros e batedores. Exploraram cavernas e detectaram minas e granadas. Em memória e em nome dos homens do Segundo e Terceiro Pelotões de Fuzileiros Navais Com Cães que sobreviveram, muitos dos quais devem suas vidas à coragem e ao sacrifício destes valorosos animais.
Memorial Animais na Guerra - Dedicado aos animais que serviram e morreram junto com soldados britânicos e aliados em guerras e campanhas do século XX; é o que está escrito no memorial, mais a curta, mas tão verdadeira afirmação: eles não tiveram escolha.
O monumento, que consiste em uma peça de calcário de Portland (das pedreiras de Ilha de Portland, Dorset) curvada com animais em alto-relevo (inclusive um cão, veja aqui), tem próximo a ela um cavalo, duas mulas e o cão, em bronze. Na parte de trás do mural, estão gravados silhuetas de animais, representando aqueles que morreram.
O memorial (obra do escultor David Backhouse) foi inspirado pelo livro Animais na Guerra (1983), de Jilly Cooper e fica na estrada Park Lane, em Londres, Inglaterra. fonte

Irish Brigade Monument - Members of the 63rd, 69th and 88th New York Infantry Regiments are honored by this monument. They were migrates who left Ireland to escape the "potato famine". The Celtic cross is a traditional Irish symbol; the Irish Wolfhound represents faith and devotion. The inscription reads: This, in the matter of size and structure, truthfully represents the Irish wolf-hound, a dog which has been extinct for more than a hundred years.
Monumento da Brigada Irlandesa - Membros de três regimentos da Infantaria de Nova Iorque são homenageados neste monumento. Esses homens eram imigrantes que deixaram a Irlanda para fugir da "fome da batata" (1845-1852), consequencia de uma doença que devastou as plantações de batata e matou de fome quase um milhão de pesssoas. Memorial do Cão de Guerra da Pensilvânia - Monumento do artista Joe Pavone em Bristol Township, Pensilvânia, Estados Unidos. Atrás da escultura, existem três placas que listam conflitos que contaram com a participação de cães, ramos de serviços e tipos de cães militares.
The War Dog - "The Directors of the Cemetery donated a sizeable parcel of land to have a memorial monument designed and built by Walter A. Buttendorf. Sculpted by designer and builder Robert Caterson, who had worked on Grand Central Station in New York City, the monument cost $2,500 at the time. The townspeople said it would be a heroic monument that was supposed to be a Rustic Boulder executed in 'Rock of Ages' Barre Vermont Granite, surmounted by a heroic statue of a War Dog, Canteen and Helmet in bronze. It was a ten foot tall majestic monument with ten tons of granite from a Vermont quarry, topped with a bronze statue of a handsome German Shepherd wearing a Red Cross blanket. At his paws are a bronze helmet and a canteen, and the American flag proudly flies above him. It was in 1923 when the War Dog Memorial's unveiling was attended by representatives from every nation that foughten during World War I.
This was the final resting place for many heroic war dogs including Chips, the only American war dog to receive military decorations including the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. He served in World War II, and during an invasion of Sicily, Chips stormed an enemy machine gun pillbox. He cornered four soldiers and helped capture 10 men. Also buried at this cemetery is Boots, a German Shepherd who starred in Boots and Saddles, a film glorifying this dog. He helped raise over nine million dollars in war bonds. Memorial Cães de Guerra dos Estados Unidos - Localizado no Memorial dos Veteranos da Guerra do Vietnã de Nova Jérsei, em Holmdel Township, Estados Unidos. Monumento em honra dos valorosos cães de guerra norte-americanos, em bronze (escupido pelo artista Bruce Lindsay) mostrando um cão Pastor alemão junto com seu adestrador.
O Memorial é uma inicitiava da The United States War Dogs Association; em uma placa está escrito: Dedicado a todos os cães de guerra e seus adestradores/passado, presente e futruro/suas ações e sacrifícios/serão sempre lembrados.

Artist Doug Roper has created a limited edition War Dog Memorial Miniature. This miniature is available for purchase here; according to his website, a portion of all sales will go to a selected K-9 nonprofit organization.

War Memorial - Dog, Horse and Pigeon - "Statues of Dog, Horse & Carrier Pigeon: These three life-sized bronze statues were all donated at different times during the second half of the 20th century. The first of the three that was donated, the horse statue was placed at Yasukuni Shrine in 1958 to honor the memory of the horses that served in the Japanese military. Presented in 1982, this statue depicting a pigeon atop a globe honors homing pigeons used by the military. The last statue, donated in March 1992, depicts a German shepherd and honors the soldiers' canine comrades. Opened, full bottles of water are often left at these statues."

O cavalo foi doado em 1958, o pombo em 1982 e o cachorro em 1992, em homenagem aos animais usados pelo exército japonês. Memorial do Cão de Guerra da Costa Oeste - O West Coast War Dog Memorial fica em Riverside, Califórnia, na Base Aérea de March Field. Patrocinada pela Nature's Recipe Pet Foods, a escultura (esculpida por A. Thomas Schumberg) apresenta um Pastor Alemão junto com seu adestrador e foi inaugurada em 2000. Na base, placas prestam tributos a diversos cães mortos em ação.
